Since 2007, the south-Korean government has been conducting a worldwide campaign to popularise the destination and culture of South-Korea. And one of the ingredients in this Korean soft power offensive is gastronomy. This colourful food, with its inimitable flavours and relatively inexpensive prices, first won over generation Z (the ‘twentysomethings’) in France, who are used to watch K-pop and K-dramas. According to the website Eurotribune.fr, in 2023 there were some 41,000 monthly searches online for the emblematic kimchi (cabbage marinated in chilli and garlic) and 26,000 queries for bibimbap, a mixture of rice, stir-fried vegetables and marinated beef.
This enthusiasm has spilled over into other generations. Especially as Korean cuisine is presented as being very healthy and balanced. There are over 400 Korean restaurants and grocery shops in France.
Surfing on this ‘K-vague’, Korea Store is an online Korean grocery shop created by Korean food lovers. The aim of the shop is to bring the essentials of Korean cuisine to France, Belgium and Luxembourg. Korea Store selects premium or top-of-the-range products directly from Korean suppliers. This gives the products a kind of exclusivity.
There's plenty to choose from. Korea Store's online catalogue includes more than 190 products. Snacks and instant noodles are the most numerous, with a range of 42 products. These include the famous instant ramen, Buldak and Chapagetti. Almost as important is the selection of oils and sauces. Sesame and perilla oils (a highly aromatic plant known as shiso in Japan), soy sauces, fish sauces, vinegars and mirins: in total, there are 41 products in this selection that professionals and consumers can order online.
There are also 22 different condiments, including spicy sauces, fermented pastes and marinades: all essential products to fully appreciate the flavours of Korea. These products are also available in kit form, grouping together both basic products and recipes. Or even a series of products from the same producer.
