A global market in transition: focus on the beverage market size

The global beverage market is a fertile ground for innovation, driven by renewed expectations around taste, health, and experience. Alcoholic beverages, although stable in volume, remain the primary segment of the sector with sales exceeding $1.4 trillion, supported by premiumisation and innovation. At the same time, non-alcoholic beverages — worth over $1 trillion — are emerging as a key area of innovation, with redesigned soft drinks, infused waters, and functional beverages accounting for over 30% of product launches. More discreet but strategic, the hot drinks market ($222 billion) is also evolving, driven by the rise of specialty coffees, wellness teas, and convenient and eco-friendly formats.

The French alcoholic beverage industry: market sizes and trends

Over the past two decades, alcohol consumption per capita has fallen by 23% in volume, mainly due to prevention initiatives and a significant decline in wine sales. Despite this context, spirits have remained relatively stable, supported by premium ranges and more occasional consumption. In 2023, the unfavourable economic climate weighed heavily on the sector: sales of wine, champagne, and spirits declined, with volume decreases of up to 7%, and even slight price inflation failed to halt the decline in the overall market value.

Non-alcoholic beverages: high standards, creativity, and the quest for premium quality

The non-alcoholic beverage market in France is valued at over €10 billion and is diversifying with more natural and premium products. Iced teas, which are growing strongly (+13%), as well as organic fruit juices and flavoured waters, are driving this trend. Even energy drinks, with natural and organic versions, are now attracting health-conscious consumers, drawn by their health benefits.

Speciality coffee, bean formats, and organic products are driving growth. Tea and herbal tea consumption is booming: two out of three French people say they drink tea, and one in two drink herbal tea. This consumption is driven by committed brands and expectations around well-being and products made in France.
